Context

Just as the Sun shines on everyone, Spirit calls to each one of us all the time – guiding us, helping us, gently inviting us to awaken. Yet, it is difficult to wrap our minds that we are given aid all the time. After all, we don’t hear voices from behind burning bushes. Neither do we see angels flapping wings, visiting us in times of distress. So, what’s with us being guided and aided all the time?

All the talk about burning bushes and booming voices and flying angels has given us the wrong impression. Why would God want to frighten us or add more stress to our already stressful lives? In fact, if we are looking for signs of miracles and guidance, we need to turn our attention to more gentle experiences: a delightful thought, a startling insight, an unexplained attraction to color, word, or sound. Miracles, I call them.

There was a time when I would not have called them that. Miracles were reserved for the scriptures. And nothing short of turning water into wine or raising the dead qualified as a miracle. So, what exactly are the miracles, and how do we recognize them?

Right Mind Answers

Learning by teaching, receiving by giving, being helped by helping, increasing by sharing. When both sides are better off, a miracle has happened. If one side gains while the other loses, it is the way of the world. No miracle has occurred. Easy to use as a device to help recognize the miracles, never in doubt as to which world plays out – the rules of the ego or the higher laws of Heaven, where there is no loss.

How do you feel in the presence of miracles? You will feel uplifted, joyous, and protected. All doubts, fears, anger, and frustrations are banished. Just because you don’t see miracles, it doesn’t make them less tangible. You cannot see electrons, and yet you do not run around declaring them nonexistent. Just as the electrons cause a lightbulb to turn on, the miracles light up your inner light, which even those who don’t see can feel.

The miracles allow you to create without fear of mistakes. Everything right is preserved, everything wrong is overlooked—only the correct things matter. The mistakes are discarded without a trace or significance. Are you full of wonder, or are you closed off to all around you? Look around – the miracles are everywhere.

The miracle-mindedness is your natural state of being. You make an effort not to be in it. Stop the effort, and the state of miracle-mindedness emerges on its own. You don’t need to do anything but stop the distractions and be still for a moment. “Be still and know!”

We are not bodies and never were. We are thoughts. The miracles shift our thoughts from the visible into the invisible. They remind us of who we are and what we have forgotten in a world dominated by the physical. It is the miracles that move us along towards Spirit and keep us from losing ourselves completely into matter.

Nobody can deny a miracle. They can avoid it, ignore it, or dismiss it. They can try to explain it away but never to deny it. That is why there are so many lies – to hide and twist the truth of the miracles, like a blanket covering your eyes. If only you allowed yourself to see and accept, the miracle would lift you up in a snap of a moment. You can rise above the material plane, never to return.

Such is the use of miracles. They are the practical guides for release and forgiveness. Do you receive as you give? Then, you are being blessed and released. Look only for this and this only.

What to do

People get closed off to miracles by growing dull. By ignoring their inner child until it gives up completely. By muffling their higher feelings and aspirations. By conforming to others who have already dulled their senses. You can regain your miracle consciousness by going out in nature and observing without judgment. By quieting the internal and external chatter. By sitting still, albeit for a moment.

Be willing to be open-minded — no need to go all the way through. Just be willing to accept the possibilities. The miracles will do the rest. God will do the rest. Listen to everything around you. The signs and miracles are everywhere for you to see and get your answers. The more indifferent to the outcome, the easier to hear the answers. It’s your preferences that clamor loudly and shut down your ears and eyes.

Reflection

When I walked into the empty post office to ship a package, the lonely front desk clerk chatted me up. We discussed the weather, family overseas, and the state of shipping charges nowadays. And though I was being polite and engaged, my mind was otherwise occupied – my house plants had been ailing for a while, and I had no idea what was wrong with them.

“Do you want to know what the single worst problem with household plants is?” the friendly clerk offered in a non-sequitur manner. I snapped to attention. Where did this topic come from? I had not mentioned my concerns to him. “It is overwatering,” he continued solicitously, “Or, at least, that is what my sister says.”

Could that be the answer to my ailing plants? I went straight back home that afternoon and repotted my plants immediately. Without standing water pooling at the bottom of the pots and no watering for several days, the plants immediately perked up.

It was a miracle moment. A fleeting meeting between two strangers where both received something out of the exchange. The friendly post-office clerk probably heard his answers while I received mine. A win-win situation. There is nothing special about getting answers from the world around us. In fact, those answers are there all the time. What it takes to see them is a shift in perception. A state of awareness that looks upon an external world with the single focus, “of all that I see here and now, what holds the answer to my question?” Then, listen, observe, and let the miracles do their job.
